Tertain UK mobile network operators were actively blocking over-the-top voice applications or using anti-competitive terms and conditions to deter the use of those services.
What We Did
- Extensive engagement campaign with the relevant minister, UK parliamentarians, the DCMS and Ofcom.
- Evidence provided to various select committee evidence sessions and amendments suggested within the 2014/15 Consumer Rights Bill.
- Lobbying of the European Commission and MEPs over the Single Telecoms Package between 2013-15, which aimed to enshrine ‘net neutrality’ regulation into law.
The Results
UK mobile operators changed their practises, all signed up the Open Internet industry code and amended their terms and conditions. The Single Telecoms Package was approved, which prohibited the blocking of over-the-top voice applications by MNOs or ISPs. This entered into force in May 2016.
